Girls into Construction in Hounslow – P3 Challenge

Aim – Promote the Construction Industry process to females
Area – Greater London
Contact - Rachel Hann, CITB-ConstructionSkills

October 7th saw the start of NCW for the residents of Hounslow with a ‘Girls into Construction’ diversity event. A day long activity but run on two consecutive days, was organised and run by Mowlem, Joanna Bremner from Hounslow EBP and members of the London Education Team.

Both days involved eight female professionals from Mowlem and a hundred and fifty girls from eight schools across the Borough. The aim of this event was to promote diversity, as well as introducing the various disciplines within the construction industry. The activity, designed around a real life project, asked each group to work through management, logistic, health and safety and community issues, facing the development of a new leisure centre.

Working in groups of six/eight, the girls were given site and floor plans, budgets for their materials/facilities, tour of site and Health and Safety training.

The activity required the girls to work on various aspects of the construction process, replicas of those faced by the construction team working on a real site.

The activity culminated in a five minute presentation from each group regarding their site plans, leisure centre design and cost, health and safety issues and team working skills. Being a prestigious event, CITB-ConstructionSkills and Mowlem offered a trip of a lifetime for the winning group, a day trip to Paris. The trip is due to take place just before the pupils break up for the Christmas holidays.

Overall, both days were a great success, enjoyed by the pupils, teachers and organisers and provided a very clear and accurate picture of the construction industry and the excellent opportunities and challenges it offers.

Pat Duggan, Project Manager at Mowlem plc said: “We are delighted to be involved in such an important project, which will highlight to all students involved, the wide range of jobs available in construction. All attending from Mowlem are looking forward to discussing our occupations with the girls and perhaps challenging the standard perceptions on the industry – hopefully encouraging more women to train for careers within construction in the future” back
