Speed Construction Competition

Aim: To engage employers with young people
Area: North West

Pupils Band with Baldrick to build for their schools.

School pupils from across Greater Manchester joined with TV’s Tony Robinson as they directed major construction companies to build a structure ‘useful to schools’ inside three hours on 9th October.

Teams from Laing O’Rourke, Bovis Lendlease, Parkinson Building Contractors and Lambert & Walker (Restoration) were each challenged to formulate a cunning plan to build a variety of structures. The children, lead by the ever enthusiastic Tony Robinson, judged the structures after making their own changes to the designs.

The winners Laing O’Rourke designed and built a giant snakes and ladders game to aid pupils with counting.

Parkinsons made an impressive mobile stage, Lambert & Walker showed off their talents with a mounted stone sundial and Bovis Lendlease made fun sports equipment, which they played with for the rest of the afternoon!

The structures are being donated to the judging schools and the sundial will form part of a memorial for a pupil killed in the Warrington bombing.

Our thanks go to Amey Mouchel, who supplied all the cones and to Greater Manchester LSC who helped fund the event!! back
