Who are we?
The Maternitywear Exchange Ltd is run by Miriam Blazey. I have a retail background having worked in the ladieswear department of Dickins & Jones in Regent Street, and as a sales rep selling laboratory equipment and furniture for 8 years before I had the first of our two girls. I am a senior volunteer with the National Childbirth Trust and am more than delighted to put you in touch with local branches to help you enjoy your pregnancy and the early years of parenting.
The Maternitywear Exchange was originally set up as a hobby but very quickly grew into a full-time family run business. My husband Ian helped run it in the early days until our second daughter went to school; my Dad designed the first website as a labour of love, learning everything from scratch; my brother took some of the photographs and my sisters offered their own advice based on their work experiences with Dickins & Jones, Dash (part of the Alexon group) and Gap. My Mum made lots of tea to help us along the way!!
When I was expecting the first of our two girls I discovered the problems a mother-to-be has in finding maternity clothing, as well as the expense of buying maternity clothing that are only used for such a short period of time. In my job as a sales rep I used local dress agencies to buy brand new or second hand work maternity clothing and special occasion outfits so that I could have a bigger wardrobe of clothes but with a smaller bank account - but when I discovered I was pregnant, I realised that there was no equivalent for maternity clothing.
The concept of "The Maternitywear Exchange" is to provide a service to pregnant women by offering affordable, good quality discounted maternity clothes in relaxed surroundings, sold at discounted prices to suit all pockets, and walks of life. We sell them online so that you can try them in the comfort of your own home or in the showroom attached to our home for a more personal one to one service. The maternity clothes are available in sizes 8 - 20+ and may be bought at 50-90% off the normal shop price.
"I like to think that I only lend the clothes to my customers, as I am always looking for good condition maternity clothing to be returned. We can then pass the benefits onto the next generation of mums-to-be."
We aim to offer the largest selection of nearly new & end of line season maternity clothes in the country with as many labels represented as we can - these will include
- High Street names : Dorothy Perkins, Hennes, M&S, Mothercare and Next.
- Specialist Maternity companies such as: Blooming Marvellous and JoJoMamanBebe.
- Specialist Designer wear labels such as: Arabella B, Blooming, Two Of Us, Two Plus One, Valja & Vida Vita.
The Maternitywear Exchange & the Environment
Were proud that we are helping to re-cycle maternity clothes and to give them new life - we hope you will be too. Our customers look after their clothes more because they know that they can recycle them later.
On average our maternity clothes last for two pregnancies before they are re-cycled with the textile industry. Our ex-hire maternity wedding dresses were donated to Oxfam for their specialist shops. Maternity clothes that do not meet our selling requirements are donated to Dr Barnados for their use, and old but still useable new bras are sent to a charity who collects them for homeless hostels and third world countries where any underwear is a luxury.
We also sell Brand New maternity clothes. These are end of line/end of season clearance stock from independent companies that trade on the high street - sometimes with only one boutique - and/or via the internet but need to move new stock and are happy to sell it through us at a discounted rate. Some of the stock is from independent companies who are no longer trading and whose stock we have bought. We do not buy or trade on behalf of large high street "institutions" so that the stock you have to choose from is more individual
Any special wishes, extra length petite or 20+ size, please call or email us and we will search for specific items for you from our database.
