The Lake District is most famous for the spectacular walking it offers in its hill and fells, although it is becoming Canoeing on Wastwater in the Lake Districtan increasingly popular destination for canoeists and touring kayakers alike.

Don’t be fooled by the fact that this Cumbrian district technically contains only one lake – it has meres, tarns and waters a plenty to make up for this, not to mention myriad rivers feeding and draining said bodies of water. The problem that faces the canoeist or touring kayaker in the Lakes is the abundance – rather than the lack – of choice of things to do, places to paddle a canoe or kayak. Given a week, or even longer, with a car packed with kids, dog, canoeing & kayaking kit and a couple of canoes or kayaks strapped to the roof you could really explore this expansive quasi-wilderness, which is the largest of England’s 13 national parks and the second largest in the UK, and probably paddle some exceedingly tranquil and nigh-on unspoilt lakes (in the loose sense of the word).

If you don’t have the luxury of many days folding out ahead of you in which to explore and search out some of Lakeland’s more obscure hidden paddling gems, but instead only have those 48 wonderful hours that directly precede the 6am Monday morning alarm and subsequent commute to the office, then there are a few more obvious- though nonetheless rewarding – paddling routes all easily doable in one weekend that will give you an essential taste of what it’s like paddling in the Lake District and provide the sense of calm mental relaxation only afforded by a serene paddle in England’s most beautiful location.
